Chapter 17: Hay Day
Hilda made six phone calls from my kitchen, and by eight o'clock Saturday morning, nine trucks were in the yard.
The last forty round bales still sat out in the creek field where the rain had kept the baler from getting them in.
They would rot if they stayed another week.
I had been too proud to ask anyone to move them.
"You didn't ask," Hilda said, handing a stack of paper plates to a woman I knew from the church basement. "I did. That's how it's done."
Men I'd known all my life backed hay wagons into the field.
A boy of about twelve drove the tractor with his tongue between his teeth.
Nels worked the loader, with his bandage taped over in black electrical tape and his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
I stood on the flatbed wagon at the edge of the field, stacking bales as they came up.
I kept losing count.
Every time he swung the loader around, I found my eyes had gone to the back of his neck.
