Chapter 19: Separate Rooms, You Said
Hilda's grandsons unloaded the team at dusk and led them down the barn aisle to the box stalls my father had built.
Nine men stood around in the barn with their caps in their hands, looking at two horses.
I had brought a bucket of oats.
Nels took the harness down from its pegs in the tack room and ran his thumb over the worn leather of the collar.
"Per oiled this the week before he died," he said.
"I know. I helped."
"Newlyweds," one of the men said, with a wink, to the others. "They'll be wanting the barn to themselves."
A few of them laughed.
I set the bucket down.
I had been bold for most of a month with a bad plan and a worse husband, and I was tired of being the woman who blushed at jokes.
"You're right," I said, loudly.
The laughter stopped.
"Everybody out of my barn," I said. "I'm taking my husband upstairs, and I intend to put my hands on him in ways I'll deny in church."
