Chapter 24: Sixty-One More

Hilda opened the screen door before he could knock.

"I'm going to look at my cows," she said, taking her coat off the hook. "All eleven. It will take an hour."

"Hilda," Nels said.

"Eat something first, boy," she said, and went out past him into the dusk.

The door banged.

He stood in the middle of her kitchen with the shoebox against his chest, and I stood on the other side of the table with my chair on its back between us.

I picked up the chair.

I sat down, because my legs had decided to.

"Say it, then," I said. "Whatever you came to say."

Nels put the box on the table in front of me and took the rubber band off.

There were letters inside, a great many, packed on edge.

They were in plain white envelopes, each with my name on the front in his square capitals, and none of them had a stamp.

I looked at the first.

It was addressed to Solveig Rostad, Route 2, Rostad Ridge.
