Nels's POV

Delores's white sedan was in the yard when we got home from the church.

Every light in the farmhouse was on.

I parked beside it and sat for a moment with my hands on the wheel, and Sol put her hand on my arm.

"Let me," I said.

"No. Together."

We went up the porch steps side by side.

The front door stood open.

Travis came out of the hall with a garment bag over each shoulder and a suitcase in his hand, and he saw us and stopped.

He had lost his hat somewhere between the church and the farm.

Without it, his face was young and blotched, and I saw that he was scared.

"We're getting her things," he said. "Mom has the right."

"She does," Sol said. "Take them."

"You think you won."

"I think you should watch the steps. They're icy."

Travis shoved past me, and the suitcase banged my knee.

I let him.

I'd spent a month wanting to put him through the barn wall, and now I found that I did not want to touch him at all.
