Chapter 9: Honest

Troy carried the takeout upstairs and unpacked it onto my kitchen table.

It was shrimp fried rice from the place on Bull Street, two containers, one with extra ginger for me.

He remembered things like that.

He sat down across from me and took off his jacket, and he looked tired in the good way, a man who had been outdoors in the wind for two days.

"You're quiet," he said.

"I'm thinking."

"About the wedding?"

"About something I have to tell you."

I hadn't planned it.

I had planned, in the stairwell, to wait until I knew what to say.

But he was looking at me with those open eyes, holding a pair of chopsticks, and I realized that the waiting was already a kind of lie.

I put my hands flat on the table.

"I'm going to say all of it," I said. "And I want to say it before anything happens. Because nothing has happened."

Troy set down the chopsticks.

"Okay."

"I think I'm attracted to Romy."

I said it straight out, in a flat steady voice.

"I think I've been attracted to her since the first photo shoot, and maybe before that, and I didn't see it. Today in her studio I almost kissed her. I didn't. I'm telling you before I decide anything else."

I stopped.

My heart was beating hard in my ears.

Troy looked at me for a long time.

Then his shoulders came down, and he rubbed one hand over his face.

"Okay," he said again.

"Okay?"

"I mean, thank you. For telling me. For not waiting until after."

I stared at him.

"Troy. I just told you."
