Chapter 9: Head of the Table
On Sunday I put Agata at the head of the table.
It was a long lunch for fourteen, with every Bellanca captain and both of the dock bosses.
The radio in the kitchen was already muttering about the Gulf.
A wave had formed off the Yucatan, and nobody could say yet where it was going.
I had set the table myself, with a clean cloth and Agata's good plates.
At the head, where Marcello's chair had stood since his father died, I set a smaller chair with a cushion.
At the foot I put the old captain with the cigar-stained moustache.
For myself I laid a place at Marcello's right.
When the first men came in, they looked at the cushion and then at me.
Agata came last, leaning on the doorframe with the keys at her belt.
"What is this?" she said.
"Your chair," I said.
"I've never sat there."
"You've kept every key in this house for fifty years. Sit."
She did.
She lowered herself onto the cushion with her mouth pinched and her eyes very bright.
