Chapter 11: Third Pew

Malcolm took me to the roof of his building, because it was the one place in Boston nobody could hear us.

The sun was going down behind the harbor.

I stood at the parapet in his coat and shook.

"He gets everything," I said. "Dad's forty-one, then mine, the minute I'm dead. He only has to wait until Friday."

"He won't get it."

"You can't know that."

"I do," Malcolm said.

I turned around.

He stood a few feet off with his hands loose at his sides.

His face was white.

"Lena, I need to tell you something. I'd rather you hear it from me than guess it."

"If you say you're sorry, I'll hit you."

"I'm not sorry." He stopped. "I remember it too."

I could not move.

"The dinner," he said. "Brynn, walking past my hand. I remember Marshall saying her name and not yours. I remember sitting at that table the first time, last time, and thinking she was the loveliest girl in the room."

"Last time," I said.

"I married her four months later."

I heard my own pulse in my ears.

"You were at my funeral," I said.

"I was in the third pew. You were twenty-nine. They said you'd lost your footing on the cliff. Shane gave the eulogy. He cried so well that the whole church cried with him."

"Malcolm."

"I looked at you in that white casket. I'd never met you. I'd spent a year at your father's dinners and you had never once been in the room." His voice dropped. "And I looked at my wife. Brynn had gone gray. She wouldn't look at the coffin, and she wouldn't look at Shane, and I thought, she knows something."
