Chapter 16: Your Watch

Malcolm took one step.

"Stop there," Shane said, and pulled Brynn an inch nearer the edge.

Her head rolled against his shoulder.

Her toes curled on the stone and found nothing behind the heel.

Malcolm stopped.

"What did you give her?" I said.

"Something from your own medicine cabinet, Lena. Your father's sleeping pills. The doctor will say she took six. It was a bad week for the bride."

"And me?"

"You're a grieving sister with a history." He smiled. "You'll follow her over. People will say they always knew."

I put my hand in my pocket and pressed the red button on my phone.

My thumb was shaking.

"You know where you're standing," I said.

"I know exactly where I'm standing. I fixed this rail myself."

"You cut it."

"I fixed it. I'm very good with my hands."

"You stood on this terrace two years after our wedding," I said. "Not this life. The one before it."

He laughed, a short surprised sound.

"Brynn's been telling you stories."

"You took my arm and told me you wanted to show me the sea. You said it was the one thing in the house you really loved. I said I was cold."

His smile slipped, just a little.

"I said, my feet hurt. You said, one more minute." My voice was steady and I did not know where it came from. "You put both hands on my back, Shane. You said sorry first."

He stared at me.

For the first time in my life I watched the line he had ready fail to arrive.
