Chapter 14: The Bus to Hakone
The coach to Hakone left Marunouchi at seven on Saturday morning, with twelve people, one Director and a bag of rice crackers.
Chapter ninety had posted the night before, and the whole bus was pretending it had slept.
Nao had made the seating chart, and she had made it with a straight face.
"Chief Takamine, row three, window," she read aloud. "Ichinose, row three, aisle. The Director has requested row four, directly behind."
"Directly behind," Sota repeated.
"For supervision," said Nao. "He says it's a vigilance trip."
The Director settled into row four with a thermos and a notebook, and the notebook had a heading that said SUSPECTS.
The chief sat down by the window and put on his seat belt.
Sota sat beside him and put on his seat belt.
The bus pulled out.
Within ten minutes, he knew the day was going to be long.
The road to Hakone is a ribbon of hairpin turns, and every one of them was a personal attack on Sota's stomach.
He gripped the armrest. He swallowed. He looked at the back of the seat in front and thought about nothing at all.
"Ichinose."
"Chief."
"You are green."
"It's the heater."
