Chapter 22: The Circle Form

The Comiket circle application form had one box for a circle name and two boxes for people.

Maki Tsuda slid it across the café table on the last Monday before the holidays and tapped the boxes with a black fingernail.

"I need both names by six," she said.

"The committee closes at midnight. I have been waiting four years for you to fill in the second box."

She was thirty-six, thin as a pen, with her hair in a clip and a lanyard around her neck that held eleven convention passes.

She also ate cheesecake.

The chief sat across from her in his charcoal suit, with the form in front of him.

His pen would not stay still.

Sota sat beside him.

Nobody in Section One had ever seen his tie so straight.

"Circle name," the chief said. "I propose After Hours."

"That's the comic," Maki said.

"The circle is the author."

"The circle is the brand. You need a brand. Something people will line up for, in the cold, at five in the morning."

"The Fourteenth Floor," said Sota.

The chief turned his head.

"It's where we met," Sota said. "And it's where you drew me. And it's a good name. It sounds like an insurance company."

Maki put down her fork.

"The Fourteenth Floor," she repeated, as if she were tasting it.
