Chapter 24: First Snow

The first snow came down in the afternoon, big and slow, and by dusk it lay a hand deep on the roof of Tsukimi-so.

The agent arrived at five with a briefcase and a very bad cold.

He sat at the low table in 401 and read the new lease twice.

"Landlady Mikage Ria, age two hundred and fifteen," he read aloud, in a flat voice. "Co-landlady Hoshino Nanami, age twenty-seven."

He looked at Ria.

Ria looked back at him, calmly, with her hands folded.

"The previous lease said twenty-three," he said.

"The previous lease was wrong."

He looked at the paper for a long while, and at the snow on the window, and at the two women kneeling side by side.

"I have been the agent for this building since 1989," he said. "I would like to retire."

He stamped the page and went away, and neither of them ever saw him again.

Ria signed first.

Her brush stroke was small and upright, and the ink was red.

Then she held out the brush with both hands, and Nanami took it.

She wrote her name in black beside the red.

The ink dried glossy in the lamplight.

"It is done," Ria said, very softly.

"It's done."

"You may undo it in any week."

"I know. Clause nine." Nanami set the brush down. "I'm not going to."

Ria's eyes filled, and she did not hide it.

She blew out the lamp, and the snow gave the room a blue light.

The bed in the alcove was warm.

Nanami had piled it with every quilt they owned, and the window beside it was a square of falling white.

Ria lay in the middle of it, wearing nothing, with her red hair spread out on the pillow and her amber eyes dark.

"The first snow," Nanami said, kneeling at her feet. "I'm going to take all night."

"Take it."

"Say what you want."

"You," said Ria, and nothing else.

Nanami lifted one foot and kissed the silver ring around the ankle.

She kissed the other.

She worked her way up the inside of Ria's calf, and her knee, and the long soft inner thigh, taking her time over every inch.

Ria's breath got louder.

Nanami settled between her legs and spread her gently with both thumbs.

She was soaked.

Nanami licked her, one long slow stroke, and Ria's back came off the bed.
