Chapter 8: The Harness

The cleaner rolled her cart past the glass doors without once turning her head.

She had earphones in.

Nanami let her breath out, and Ria bit the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing out loud.

They were both dressed within a minute, and out of the building within three.

The rent night came on Friday, and Ria knocked at eight o'clock exactly.

She held a flat black paper bag with a Shinjuku shop name on it, and her face was stiff with nerves.

"I have drafted a proposal," she said, and walked past Nanami into the room.

She set the bag on the kotatsu and stood with her hands behind her back.

"I have been alive for two hundred and fourteen years, and I have had time to read."

"I have noticed that a woman may want to be filled. I have noticed that I do not have the equipment."

"So I bought it. They had a very helpful clerk. She said the black one was for beginners."

Ria's ears were red.

"I have no idea how to put it on."

Nanami stared at the bag.

Then she began to laugh, helplessly, with one hand over her eyes.

"Don't laugh. I took a train to Shinjuku for this."

"I'm not laughing at you. I'm so..." She wiped her eyes. "I'm so touched. Give it here. I'll show you."

She pulled out the contents with one finger.

Nanami pulled out the futon with one hard tug, climbed on it and got on her hands and knees.

She looked back over her shoulder.
