Chapter 14: Britta Asks

"Gambling," I said.

"That's what he told me."

"Dale Quist wouldn't drive past a casino with the windows down. He thinks a slot machine is a tax on stupid people."

"I know," said Britta. "I know that now."

"Now?"

"When I said it out loud just now, it sounded so stupid I wanted to hide in the woodpile."

She let go of my hand.

"Can we go somewhere with no cameras and no ears, Mom? I need to yell at you."

At eight the next morning she untied the lodge's pontoon boat from the dock and drove it out into the bay.

She had learned boats from her father, and she handled the wheel the way he did, one-handed and stubborn.

I sat on the bench seat with the duffel bag between my feet.

When we were a quarter mile from shore she cut the engine and let us drift.

"Why didn't you tell me in March?" she said.

"I didn't know until June."

"Why didn't you tell me in June?"

"You were three states away, and you had double shifts."

"I'm a grown woman, Mom."

"You're my daughter."

"I wired him four thousand dollars in July!" Her voice cracked on the water and came back to us. "For a mortgage that was already dead. You watched me do it."
