Chapter 15: Nothing for Sale

Alister read all forty pages standing up.

He read them at the dining table in the empty lodge.

Britta sat on one side and Xander on the other, and I stood by the window.

I had not wanted to be in the room.

Britta had taken my wrist and said, "You're the one who got his name wrong for a week, Mom. You get to watch."

Alister turned the last page over and set the folder down.

"This is not mine," he said.

"It has the company's letterhead," said Xander.

"I know what it has."

He picked up the lodge's phone, a beige thing with a speaker button, and dialed from memory.

It rang twice.

"Alister," said a smooth male voice. "I wasn't expecting to hear from you before Monday."

"You sent my son's fiancee a prenuptial agreement at six o'clock this morning."

"We sent it at your instruction, of course. Ms. Hartwig called last night and said you'd cleared it, and that the engagement was imminent. We were being prompt."

Alister looked at the ceiling for a moment.

"Ms. Hartwig told you that I cleared it."

"She said you were very eager to protect the family."

"I never spoke to her about my son, and I never asked for a prenuptial."
