Chapter 19: Rehearsal

The finale stage was built at the end of the long dock, with the lake behind it and bleachers for two hundred on the lawn.

On Thursday morning the crew was still stringing cable.

Renata sat in a director's chair at the front, in her black blazer, with a headset around her neck and a clipboard on her knee.

She had not mentioned the pulled footage once, and that scared me more than shouting would have.

"Lorna," she said, without getting up. "How nice that you came back."

"You sent a boy in a headset to my daughter's porch."

"I sent a courteous reminder. Your three minutes stand if you appear."

"I'm here."

"Then you'll go last." She tapped the clipboard. "Nine fifty-seven. The final segment before the winner announcement."

"There's no winner."

"There will be one on Saturday," she said. "Let's rehearse Dale."

She said it as if she were announcing a soup.

Dale came up the stage steps in a navy blazer with a pocket square.

His sunglasses sat on top of his head, as they always did.
