Chapter 14: Ask
He came to the bunk-room door at one in the morning and didn't knock.
He stood in the hall with his hands in his jacket pockets, and he looked at the floor before he looked at me.
"Will you come out to the yard with me?" Levi said.
I sat up on the cot.
"That's asking."
"I know it is," he said.
"Say please."
"Please," he said, and I put my boots on.
He walked me past the crushed cars and the F-150 with the handprint rusted into its hood.
I didn't say a word about the hood.
At the back fence, where the grass came up through the gravel, an old school bus sat on four flat tires.
It was yellow gone to cream along the roof.
The stop sign arm was folded against its side, and every window had gone to dust.
"The district sold it to Orlin for scrap in the spring," he said. "He keeps not scrapping it."
"Is this where you bring all the married women?"
"You're the first one," he said.
"That's a lie."
"It's the truth, and you hate it," he said, and opened the folding door.
Inside it smelled of vinyl and mice and cold rain.
Somebody had pulled every seat out of it but the last bench, and the aisle ran bare and rusted to the back window.
I walked the length of it with the floor ringing under my boots.
I turned around at the end.
He stood in the doorway at the front with the yard light behind him, big and black and waiting.
He wasn't going to move until I told him to.
That was the whole point of tonight, and my mouth went dry.
I took off the jacket and dropped it.
I took off my shirt, and my bra, and my jeans, and the underwear, in the cold, one piece at a time, with him watching.
