Chapter 15: What I Want

Levi's POV

I'd changed a flat on a cattle trailer out on 56 in the dark.

It was after midnight when I carried the busted rim into the tire room and dropped it on the floor.

The tire room was a windowless cinder-block closet with one bulb and steel racks to the ceiling.

It smelled of new rubber.

Orlin kept the stock for the wrecker in there, six truck tires stacked four high against the back wall.

I sat down on the stack with my elbows on my knees and my hands hanging.

She had come back from Hays that morning, as she did every Friday.

She had said driver to me over eggs in front of my grandfather.

I'd counted that too.

The door opened and she came in and shut it behind her.

She had on my gray sweatshirt again, and her hair was down, and she stood with her back against the door.

"Levi," she said.

She said it plain, with the lights on, and my head came up.

"What do you want?"

"Nothing," I said. "Whatever you want."

"Don't."

"Carla."

"You've been saying that for three weeks. Whatever you want. Yes to every rule. Yes to the hair and the belt and the hood of a truck. On Tuesday you asked me for one thing, and you looked like it cost you a tooth." She came across the little room. "What do you want, Levi?"
