Chapter 16: At the Diner
Carla's POV
Kent was already in the corner booth when I came in, with his back to the wall and the thermos in front of him.
The diner on the square was full for a Saturday.
Ten people sat along the counter, and the waitress went down the row with the coffeepot.
A man in a seed cap laughed at something on the radio.
I wore the green dress my mother had bought me for my thirtieth birthday.
I'd put it on in her bedroom that morning, because I wanted to be wearing something she chose.
Kent had a pressed shirt on and his reading glasses pushed up on his head.
In front of him, flat on the table, lay the tow ticket.
He had smoothed out the folds.
No charge. Rescue fund.
"Sit down, Carla."
I sat.
"I called the Co-op office on the highway," he said. "I wanted to send a thank-you note, and I didn't have the right address. The woman there told me before I'd finished the question. There is no rescue fund. Janzen and Son is two months behind on its diesel."
He turned the ticket a quarter turn, so it faced me.
"Somebody paid for my wife, and I would like to know who. Tell me I'm wrong."
He wasn't angry.
His voice was exactly what it had been on the phone at 1:40 in the morning, calm and a little late.
That was the worst of it.
I had thought about this booth all night.
I'd thought I would cry, or beg, or lie.
I did none of those things.
"You're not wrong," I said.
I said it loud enough for the counter.
