Chapter 4: Fifty Thousand to Leave

The knock came at seven on the dot.

Lark was already in the kitchen in her sweatshirt, making coffee, and she held up a hand to stop me.

"Let me."

She opened the door on the chain.

Natasha stood on the landing in her camel coat with a cream envelope in her hand and a smile ready on her face.

The smile slipped a little when she saw who had answered.

"Officer Carmody," she said. "I didn't expect you."

"I live here, Ms. Ellingwood. You sat outside my building most of the night."

"It's a public street."

"It's a public street where you parked for four hours."

"I was worried about my brother."

"Worried enough to wave at him."

Natasha's eyes slid past her to me, standing in the hall in a fire department T-shirt.

"Cal," she said warmly. "There you are."

I said nothing.

She slipped a cashier's check out of the envelope and held it toward me through the gap.

It was made out to me for fifty thousand dollars.

"Take it," Natasha said. "Get on a plane this morning and stay away until Saturday. After that you can come back and I'll see that you're comfortable."

"Fifty thousand," I said.

"More than Dad would ever give you."

"Somebody took thirty-eight thousand dollars out of my account."

"Did I?" She tilted her head. "I never touched your account. If Monique moved some money, she was building a home for the family. You should thank her."

"The family."

"Monique is moving into the house tonight," Natasha said. "Mom made up the blue room for her. She's one of us now."
