Chapter 12: Across the Street
By two in the afternoon, my sister's video had four million views.
She had cut it carefully.
It began when the guards grabbed Wayne, and it ended when he hit the floor.
It didn't show the swing.
Over it she had typed: My husband came to talk to his sister-in-law about a family problem. Livingston Security put him on the ground in front of a hundred people. Please share.
Under it, forty thousand strangers had called me a monster.
I read the comments standing in Giles's office, with a cup of coffee going cold in my hand.
"Mrs. Livingston," said the head of security, a broad quiet man who stood by the door. "We have the full lobby footage from three angles. Do you want it released?"
"Yes."
"Now?"
"Now. And the clip of the guard's face, with the timestamp."
"Done."
"Hallie," Giles said.
He sat on the edge of his desk with his tie loosened.
"You don't have to answer her. Let the footage speak."
"It will."
"Then why are you putting on your coat?"
"Because there are eleven cameras on the plaza," I said, "and I'd like them to see me say it."
He studied me.
Then he took his own coat from the chair.
"I'll come."
"You don't have to."
"I know."
We went down together.
The reporters had gathered at the base of the tower steps, a dozen of them, with microphones and a wall of lenses.
They shouted my name as we came out.
Giles stopped one step behind me and a little to my left.
