Chapter 17: The Pit
"The roof of what?" the charity chair said.
Nobody answered her.
The corridor was a ring of faces, and in the middle of it my sister stood with blood on her chin, asking me a question that no one else could understand.
"Reese is overwrought," I said, in a voice that carried.
"I'm not overwrought. I'm telling them."
"She's had a blow to the head. Someone call an ambulance and the police."
"Already done, dear," said the chair's husband, with his phone to his ear.
Wayne started to move toward the door.
Two of the club's staff and a man from the board stepped in front of him, and Giles stepped in behind.
He had not laid a hand on anyone, and he did not have to.
Wayne stopped.
"It's a family matter," he said.
"Not any more," said the chair.
The police took him out through the kitchen, so that he wouldn't have to walk past the ballroom, and half the donors followed to watch.
Reese gave no statement.
She sat on a velvet bench with a napkin pressed to her lip, and she said she had slipped on the floor.
A dozen witnesses said she hadn't.
By midnight Wayne was out on bail, and my sister's name was in three group chats under the word "roof".
At five the next morning my phone lit up with a number I didn't know.
It said: The pit. Six o'clock. Come alone and I'll tell you what I meant.
I stared at the message, and then I did what I would not have done a week before.
I walked down the hall of my father's house in my socks and knocked on the guest room door.
Giles opened it dressed.
He had been sitting in the car, then in the kitchen, and now he stood in the doorway with his jacket over his arm.
