Chapter 11: The Gathering
My mother rang the Hall bell at midnight.
A Luna can call the pack once in her life without the Alpha's word.
She had never done it before.
By the time the last people hurried in, still in their coats, the Gathering Hall was full to the walls.
I stood on the floor in front of the long table where the cake had been.
Rowan stood on my right and Hester on my left, holding the grey book against her chest.
Clara sat in her chair at the head of the table with a blanket across her knees.
Lenore had carried her in herself, and she had not let anyone help.
My father came in last.
He walked down the aisle with his hands open and his face grave and kind.
"Lenore," he said. "What is this?"
"The pack needs to hear something," my mother said. "Hester."
The old healer stepped forward.
"Sixteen years ago," Hester said, in a voice that carried, "on the night the Alpha's daughters were born, the Goddess spoke at the Stone. I wrote down what she said, and so did the Alpha's scribe. Then the Alpha cut his copy of the page out of the Hall book."
A murmur went through the room.
"That's absurd," my father said.
"Hall copy, shelf behind the dais," Hester said. "Third from the end. The stub of the page is still there."
An elder on the front bench got up and walked to the shelf.
He took the book down and opened it.
He ran his thumb along the spine and went quite still.
"There's a stub," he said.
"Anyone can cut a page," my father said, gently. "Hester is old, and she's been strained by the last few days."
"I have the original," Hester said, and she opened the grey book and held it up.
