Chapter 15: A Real Day

The first normal day of my life began with the pack leaving things on our porch.

By nine there were a pot of stew, a jar of honey, two pairs of wool socks and a hand-knitted hat with a pompom.

Nobody knocked.

They set each thing down and left fast.

"It's an apology," Clara said, poking the hat. "They don't know how to do it with words."

"The hat is a very bad apology."

"It's orange," she agreed.

She sat in the porch swing in a blanket with her hand in mine.

For the first time in months she had color in her face.

She watched the road toward the north gate for a while.

"You still haven't told him," she said.

"Not until the Stone. I'll say no to his face."

"And the price?"

"Hester says he walks up there not knowing. So I don't tell him either." I looked at the orange hat. "But that's two nights off. Today I want one normal day."

"Then take it," she said.

My mother gave her the next hour from the other side, and I got a break.

"Go," Clara said. "Rowan's waiting. I can hear her thinking."

Rowan was at the foot of the steps with a pair of kitchen scissors.

"Haircut," she said. "You've had that fringe since you were nine."

"I like my fringe."

"You like it because nobody else was allowed near you with a blade."

I sat on the step.

She was a runner and a cook's daughter, with strong, fast hands that had never once held scissors in a straight line.

I found that out when she held up a lock of my hair and said, "Oh."

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Rowan."

"It's a little short on the left."

Clara started laughing behind us, quietly at first.

"How short?"

"It's fine. It's an asymmetrical look."

"It's a slope," Clara said. "It goes downhill."
