My Twin Was Meant to Die at Sixteen, So They Spent Me novel · Chapter 4 of 24

Chapter 4: The Window

I climbed the trellis to my sister's window at midnight.

I had done it a hundred times as a kid, when thunder scared her.

I had never done it without gloves.

The wood was rough under my bare hands and I could feel every splinter.

I could feel everything.

Her window was unlatched, and a lamp burned low inside.

Clara was propped against three pillows with a blanket over her knees.

Her cane lay on the floor, and her face was the color of paper.

She saw me and her whole body went limp with relief.

"You came," she said.

"You asked nicely."

"I wrote please. I never write please."

I climbed in and shut the window behind me.

The room smelled of herbs and lemon, and Hester's bag sat open on the dresser.

"Where is everyone?" I said.

"Mom's asleep in the chair in the hall. Hester went to fetch something. Dad's on the phone with the elders." She patted the bed. "Sit before you fall off my floor."

I sat.

For a minute neither of us said anything.

"The cake was lemon," Clara said.

I blinked.

"I hate lemon. I said I loved it when I was six because Dad had a lemon tree he was proud of. Now they make it every year."

"Every year?"

"Every year since I was six," she said. "I'm going to die with lemon in my mouth, Brynn."

I laughed before I could stop it.

Then she laughed too, a thin wheeze, and we both ended up with our foreheads together, shaking.

It was the first time in a long while that I had been in a room with my sister and not a roomful of people watching.
