My Twin Was Meant to Die at Sixteen, So They Spent Me novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Gold Eyes

Rowan found me before the sun was up.

I was still standing in the middle of Hester's cellar with my hands in the healer's.

The door banged open and Rowan fell down the steps, out of breath, with her boots untied.

"They know you're somewhere in the house," she gasped. "Your dad put out a call. The Beta and two guards are checking the cellars."

Hester let go of me.

"How many cellars?" she said.

"Three. They've done the grain store. This is next."

"Then you have a minute," Hester said, and she moved past us to the shelves.

I could not seem to move.

The word kept turning over in me.

Holding her up.

Twelve years of cold hands.

Twelve years of my mother saying, "Oh, Brynn's just thin-blooded."

"Brynn," Rowan said. "Hey. Look at me."

I looked.

"They're saying you ran away because you're jealous," she said. "I heard it in the yard. The elder said it's natural, a twin who's passed over. He said when the Goddess comes she might take the wrong sister, and that would be a sorrow, but one the pack could bear."

"The wrong sister."

"Me and my mouth," Rowan said. "I told him he was a lump of cheese. Mom said I could go back to the kitchen if I apologized, and I told her I wouldn't."

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

"They're not going to listen to you," I said.
