Chapter 8: The Hero's Hunt

The captain of the Regent's guard wore his spare key on his belt where everyone could see it.

Valdemar had told her so before dawn.

"A silver key with a bird on the bow," he'd said, tying her scarf high around her neck to hide his work. "He thinks no one in the Menagerie would dare."

"I'm no one in the Menagerie."

"No," he said. "You are the one person I would trust with it."

Now Hinata stood in the middle of the pen at noon with a black panther at her knee, and watched the Hero's party come through the gate.

Daichi walked in front, in his white tabard, with a long sword that glowed pale blue along the edge.

Behind him came the three others from the summoning circle, all in new armor, all looking at the ground.

The captain of the guard and ten soldiers lined the wall behind them.

On the gallery above, the Regent sat in his chair with his hands folded.

He had not bothered to bring the court.

"Koyama," Daichi called, and his voice cracked in the middle. "Step aside. I'm here for the monster."

"You mean the cat who sat on you."

"That was a trick!"

"It was about two hundred and seventy kilos of cat."

"Step aside," said Daichi, "or I'll move you."

Hinata looked at the sword, and at the three white faces behind him, and at the panther.

Sumi had gone very still.

"Sumi," she said quietly. "Play nice."

She stepped aside.

Daichi charged.

He charged across the sand, his blue blade swinging up in a high cut, and the soldiers on the wall cheered.

The panther moved.

One moment he was crouched in front of Hinata, and the next he was somewhere else, and the sword split empty air.
