Chapter 12: I Wrote Them

Edmund's hands went still on my waist.

"What messages?" he said.

"The ones in front of my eyes. Pale writing, in the air." I stepped back and looked at his face. "On the terrace, when Bryson was on his knee. They told me you were dormant. They told me to refuse."

He was very quiet.

"They said the best friend was lying," I said. "Every word came true. Every single one."

"Every word," Edmund said.

"They said you'd wake in three days, and you did."

"I know."

"They said if I betrayed you, you'd kill me."

I watched his face as I said it.

He closed his eyes.

"I never meant you to believe that last part," he said, very low.

I stood perfectly still.

"What does that mean?"

He opened his eyes, and they were dark red and miserable.

"It means I wrote them."

The room tilted.

I put one hand on the bedpost.

"You," I said.

"At our wedding we drank from the same cup. You know the old rite. Your blood in mine, mine in yours." He swallowed. "It makes a bond. When your heart runs hot, when you are terrified or in love or angry, a king can reach a few words across it, even in the dark. Not often. Not many."

"Six months," I said. "I sat in that crypt every night. I talked to you."

"Your heart was never hot enough."

"It was broken."

"Broken is slow," Edmund said. "I felt every one of those nights, and I could not reach you. Then you stood on a terrace with a ring in front of you, and your pulse jumped, and the door opened."

I could hardly hear him over the roaring in my ears.

"The warning about Bryson. The ring. Pippa. That was all you."
