Chapter 18: The Vote

The lady of the house of ash was waiting in the small sitting room off the stairs, with her gray shawl around her shoulders.

She did not stand when I came in.

"You're younger than I expected," she said.

"You're the one who wrote in the notebook."

"I write down everything that is worth hearing." She tapped it, on her knee. "Sit, child. We have ten minutes."

I sat.

"The duke has promised me the river lands if my house votes against your husband," she said. "The same lands his grandfather burned from my grandmother's hands."

"Will you take them?"

"I am old, not stupid. A man who gives you back what he took is a man who wants something more." She looked at me with eyes like two pieces of slate. "Tell me honestly. Do you want the crown, or do you want the king?"

"I want my husband."

"The crown comes with him."

"Then I'll carry it."

She looked at me for a long moment.

"The girl said the duke told her about the brackets," she said. "A man cannot know what the dead will write unless he has read about it, or arranged it. I should like to know which."

"I don't know. I'd like to know too."
