Chapter 10: The Mirror Room
I didn't sleep.
I lay in my bunk with the word burning behind my eyes.
Tithe.
At dawn I opened the gold window and thought the word at it as hard as I could.
TITHE PAID: 1.
DETAILS UNLOCK AT LEVEL 7.
It showed no more than that, and it shut itself the moment I tried to push.
"You're doing the face," Poppy said, from the bunk below, upside down, with a toothbrush in her mouth.
"What face?"
"The one that says you're sneaking out again." She spat in the cup. "Go. Be happy. Bring me gossip."
Fourth Company's afternoon block was unarmed combat in the old dance studio on the third floor.
It had a sprung wood floor, a long ballet barre, and a wall of mirrors from corner to corner.
The Sergeant ran it.
Halfway through the second hour, the Sergeant got a message and left, and Major Rook took over without a word.
He taught us a hold and a break, and he used me as the demonstration.
His hand around my wrist was cold and exact.
His eyes never left my face.
When the bell rang and the company filed out, he said, "Cadet Solheim. Remedial."
