Chapter 20: The Altar
"Since the first night," I repeated.
We were standing in the empty chapel after midnight, with the snow still on our boots.
Candles burned on the altar, and the stained glass was black.
"The bond leaks," Sebastian said. "The Heir's window opens inside the Sire's head. I saw it, I read it, and I knew what it cost."
"And you said nothing."
"Would you have stopped?"
"Yes."
"That is why I said nothing." He took a breath. "I am sorry. I will go on being sorry for the rest of my life."
"How long is that?"
"Longer than I wanted, until a month ago."
I took his hands.
They were cold and thin again, and I held them until they warmed.
"It says both parties must choose," I said. "It can't be undone. My grandfather wrote that you have to be certain."
"Are you?"
"I've been certain since the roof."
"Ingrid"
"I choose you, Sebastian. I choose to be bound to you both ways, and I choose to be the one who pays when you pay."
His face did something terrible and beautiful.
"I choose you," he said hoarsely. "Not the bond. You."
The gold window opened over the altar, wide as a door.
BOTH PARTIES HAVE CHOSEN.
