Chapter 7: After Hours
The gym shower block was empty after midnight.
Late drill had run until eleven, and everyone else had gone to bed.
I stayed because the hot water was the one luxury Ravenhurst allowed.
I stood under it with my forehead against the tile and my eyes closed.
My muscles felt like wire.
My body was stronger every day, and it didn't feel like mine.
I heard the door open.
I didn't turn around.
I knew the sound of those boots.
"This is the women's block," I said.
"I know."
"You're in dress grey."
"I know that too."
The boots stopped behind me.
I turned my head, and the water ran into my eyes, and I saw him through the steam.
He stood just inside the tiled stall with his hands at his sides.
He looked the way he had in the crypt, pale and worn, but his eyes burned.
"I tried to stay away," Sebastian said.
"How long did you last?"
"Nineteen hours."
I laughed, and the sound echoed off the tile.
"That's a record."
"For me, yes."
He stepped under the spray.
The water soaked his shoulders and ran down his sleeves, and his wool jacket went dark in seconds.
He didn't seem to notice.
He put one hand flat on the wall beside my head.
"Turn around," he said.
"Why?"
"Because if you face me, I'll want to kiss you. If I kiss you, I won't last."
"Good."
"Turn around, Ingrid."
I did.
I pressed my palms against the wet tile and looked at my own hands.
Behind me, I heard his belt unbuckle.
Then his hands settled on my hips, cold against my hot skin, and I shivered all over.
