Chapter 14: Her Terms
We wrote the terms at the kitchen table on Tybee Island, on yellow legal paper, in my handwriting.
Auden made coffee and said nothing.
He wore a T-shirt and sweatpants and sat across from me waiting for a verdict.
I wrote the number one and underlined it.
"Calhoun & Daughters Marine stays in my name," I said. "All of it. The wharf, the house, the warehouse."
"Agreed."
"Perrault Capital invests in the new piers. Forty million."
"Agreed."
"For forty-nine percent of the new harbor company. Not the wharf. Not the land."
"Forty-nine."
"And I hold fifty-one."
He leaned back.
"A fifty-one forty-nine split with a bank," he said slowly, "and a woman who has never run a company."
"I ran my grandmother's books from age sixteen."
"I know. I read them."
"Then you know I've never been wrong about a number."
Something in his face lit.
It was pride.
