Chapter 16: Under the Tablecloth

Davis had asked me about the car on Sunday night.

I told him the man was a banker named Perrault who wanted the wharf, and that I'd said no.

I told him I came home because I loved him.

He cried.

He called the term sheet a fantasy of the bank's, and apologized.

On Friday night he wore a tuxedo and held my elbow up the steps of the Savannah Historical Society.

The old ballroom blazed with candles.

A hundred and fifty guests stood under portraits of dead Savannah families, and my great-grandmother's portrait hung by the stairs.

I wore the green silk.

Davis steered me to the head table and pulled out my chair.

"Mrs. Foster," a society matron cooed. "How wonderful to see you."

"It's Ms. Calhoun," I said.

Davis laughed.

"She's just being modern."

A man in a charcoal tuxedo came to the table, read the place cards, and stopped at the empty chair on my left.

"Ms. Calhoun," Auden said.

"Mr. Perrault."

"I'm told I'm seated beside you. The Society wanted the investor who'll rebuild the wharf next to its heiress."

"Investor?" Davis said.

His smile was a thin sheet of glass.

"Perrault Capital has expressed interest in the harbor," Auden said. "I hope you don't mind. Mr. Foster, isn't it?"

"Davis."

They shook.

I watched my fake husband's hand disappear in Auden's, and I saw a muscle jump in his jaw.

"Ms. Calhoun's husband," Davis said.

"Is it?" said Auden pleasantly. "I thought her name was her own."

The first course came.

Davis turned to talk to the mayor on his other side.

Auden sat, shook out his napkin, and put his left hand under the tablecloth.
