Chapter 16: Breach

The boy went into surgery at midnight, and at six in the morning the surgeon came out smiling.

I slept two hours on the recliner, and I went to work.

Allison went to work too, in the same boots, after sleeping in a hallway chair.

We had not said ten words to each other.

At nine on Friday, a black sedan stopped in front of the main entrance.

A man in a tan overcoat climbed out of it, followed by a woman in a gray suit carrying a briefcase.

I knew the man's face from the Hartnell Home Furnishings website.

He had his son's jaw, and a heavier version of his son's smile.

"Brody's father," Kayla said at my shoulder. "And his lawyer."

"They're early."

"They're on the sidewalk. We don't have to let them in."

"Let them in," I said. "I want the floor to hear this."

They walked into the lobby, where forty or fifty employees were drinking coffee before the shift.

The man looked around once.

"I'm here for Allison Draper," he said, loudly.

Allison came out from behind the dock door in her white badge, wiping her hands on a rag.

"I'm Allison."

"You're the one who's been using my son."

The lobby went still.

"I beg your pardon?"

"My son has told me everything. You made him promises. You told him you'd put four hundred thousand dollars into my business."

"And then you humiliated him on the street and threw him out of this company."

"I never promised him that," Allison said.

"He has your messages."

The lawyer opened her briefcase and took out a printed sheet.

"Mr. Hartnell has a text from your account, dated the day before the party," she said. "It reads: *Of course. Whenever you're ready.* We consider it a binding commitment to a family loan."
