Chapter 19: Dane's Counter
"Then it's the worst page in the world," our lawyer said on Tuesday morning, "and he's been saving it."
She sat in my mother's den with her glasses on her nose and the recording on a laptop in front of her.
"Willa signed it. We can't pretend otherwise."
"I signed a pile of papers a man handed me while I was holding a newborn," Willa said.
"That's the story, and it's true. But he's going to tell a different one."
"What different one?"
"Watch his filing."
It came that afternoon, forty-one pages from his lawyer.
I read it on the porch step, and by page six I wanted to put my fist through the railing.
It said Willa Penrose knew the identity of the birth mother from the first day.
It said she had agreed, in writing, to the arrangement.
It said she had suffered "a documented psychiatric episode" after the third loss, and that her husband had "protected her for years from her own instability."
Attached were two pages of hospital records with most of the lines blacked out.
"The hospital kept me two nights," Willa said quietly, behind me.
She had come out in her cardigan with her arms wrapped around herself.
"The third time I bled for hours. They watched me because I almost didn't come home."
"I know."
"He's put a different word on the front of it."
I stood and put my arms around her, in plain daylight, in front of the neighbors.
She held on to my sweatshirt, and she shook.
The next morning my mother called an all-hands in the service bay at Penrose Ford.
