Every head in the atrium turned to the foot of the stairs.
Clark took his hands out of his pockets.
He walked up the steps slowly, and when he reached the top he stopped beside me, not in front.
He didn't take the microphone from Dax.
"Give it to me," he said.
"Why would I?"
"Because you asked me a question."
Dax hesitated.
Eight hundred people were watching, and he was a man who had never said no to an audience.
He held out the microphone.
Clark took it, and for a moment he looked at the crowd without saying anything.
"Cecelia never took a cent from me," he said. "Not a dollar, not a gift, not a favor."
"The money went to the girl who answered the phone in daylight," Clark said.
