Chapter 21: The Harbor
I pushed the door and stepped into the dark where it had all started.
I had pressed record on my own phone in the car and slid it into my breast pocket with the camera out.
I did not touch it again.
The boathouse smelled the same, like harbor mud and old rope.
A single work lamp burned on a stand and threw long shadows on the water.
Katia sat in the wooden chair, tied, with tape over her mouth.
Her eyes found mine and went wide, and she shook her head hard.
Sal stood behind her in the camel coat with a folding knife in his right hand.
Two of his men stood to the sides, one by the dock and one by the rack of long rowing oars.
"The signorina is punctual," Sal said.
"Let her go."
"The phone first."
I held up Katia's phone and set it on the concrete between us.
"There it is."
"And the copies."
"She put them in a cloud," I said. "I don't know how to reach it. She does."
"Then the girl will show us."
