Chapter 22: The Fall
Nero walked into the back hall at ten past one with Sal Ferraro by the collar.
Nine captains sat along the wall in the candlelight, and Don Aldo sat in the carved chair under the painting of the saint.
Every head turned.
Sal's camel coat was torn at the shoulder, his left wrist hung at a wrong angle, and the gold ring on his little finger had cut his own palm.
"This man called you here to name a new Don," Nero said. "I brought him to answer."
He threw Sal onto the swept floor, and Sal landed on his good hand.
I came in behind them with Katia.
She had my scarf pressed to her cheek and her glasses back on, held together at the nose with a bit of electrical tape from the Buick.
"Mona," Sal gasped. "Tell them. The girl attacked me. The boy broke into my..."
"Be quiet," Aldo said.
He said it softly.
Sal stopped.
"Sit up," Aldo said.
Sal pushed himself to his knees.
The old man rose from his chair, and the hall seemed to lean toward him.
"I have something to say to you, and I will say it once," he said to the nine. "I need every man in this room to listen."
