Two hundred and forty thousand dollars, my father's building and Nonna's apartment, all for one blank line.
"You'd sign that?" I said.
"Today. Right here." Vittore smiled. "Family helps family, Doctor. You've been through enough. Let the lawyers fight about the cop. Go home and fix dogs."
Tino had moved one step down, closer to Vittore.
Below us, the reporters had noticed.
I took the paper out of Vittore's hand.
He let it go easily.
I turned around and walked down the steps toward the cameras.
The reporters pushed in.
"Dr. Cerrato, is the annulment granted?"
"Has your husband..."
"He's not my husband," I said. "As of ten minutes ago, he never was."
I held up the paper so the cameras could see it.
PAID IN FULL, in big careful handwriting, over an empty line.
"My name is Viola Cerrato. I'm a veterinarian on Mayfield Road. On June sixth I took a bullet out of a man my husband shot at our wedding." My voice didn't shake. "I am testifying against Trent Brophy in federal court. And the man standing on those steps just offered to forgive my two hundred and forty thousand dollar loan if I don't."
