Chapter 6: Door Camera

I didn't touch the ring.

I looked at Vittore across the coffee cups.

"Thank you," I said. "Tell my husband he can keep it."

Vittore laughed and put the ring in his breast pocket.

"Marriage," he said to the table. "Always a war."

Everybody laughed with him.

Elio didn't.

In the car, I waited until Tino had pulled away from the curb.

"Trent took it off my desk on Monday," I said. "Six days later it's in your cousin's pocket."

Elio was looking out the window at Mayfield Road.

"Vittore runs trucks through every port on the lake," he said. "He talks to cops. That's his job. Half of them are on a Christmas list."

"He talked to the cop who shot you."

"He talked to the husband of the woman everyone thinks I'm sleeping with. He was being funny."

"He was being a message."

Tino's eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.

Then they went back to the road.

At the lake house I took Elio's stitches out at the kitchen table.

It was day eight.

The wound had closed clean, pink and puckered under his collarbone.

He sat with his shirt open and his jaw tight while I snipped and pulled.

"You're enjoying this," he said.

"A little."

"You think my own blood sold me."

"I think you won't look at it because he's your blood."

He caught my wrist.

Not hard.

Just enough to stop the scissors.

"Vittore held me at my father's funeral. He carried the casket. He kissed my hand in front of the whole family when I took the chair. You've known him for three hours."
