Chapter 21: The Crown Returns

"Nobody moves," Osric said.

The point of the sword pressed a bead of blood from the Eldest's neck.

She stood perfectly straight and did not so much as blink.

"Nobody moves, and nobody follows, and the old woman lives," he said.

"I will walk out of the north doors and be on a horse before the moon is a hand higher."

"Drop it, Uncle," I said.

"Or what, niece?"

"Or I'll take it off you."

"With what?" He sneered. "You're a petitioner without a throne."

Corwin's voice came through the bond, calm as a blade being drawn.

On your left. Wait for the breath.

I wasn't looking at his sword.

I was watching his shoulders.

They rolled forward and hunched, and I saw what he was about to do a half-second before he did it.

He was going to shift.

Fur burst along his arms.

The sword clattered on the stone, and the Eldest staggered back into a bench.

Osric's body swelled and tore through his silk.

A huge grey wolf with a thick mane came down on all fours in the middle of the Moon Hall.
