Chapter 23: Coronation Night

The crown was lighter than I had expected.

The Eldest set it on my brow with both her thin hands, and the Moon Hall roared so loudly the lamps swayed.

I stood in the white column of the Wolf Moon with the weight of the whole kingdom settling onto my head.

I did not cry.

I waited for it to feel like a cage, and it didn't.

It felt like a coat that had been mine all along.

We feasted until midnight, in a hall that smelled of roasted mutton and spilled ale.

The cook ran the high table and ordered the Queen of Highcrest to eat her greens.

The Queen ate them.

Garran sat between two northern elders and lost an arm-wrestling match to the white-bearded one, and demanded a rematch, and lost it too.

At the stroke of midnight I stood, and every wolf in the hall stood with me.

"Go to bed," I told them. "All of you."

"Highness," Garran called, "that's not what the toast said."

"It's exactly what I'm saying, Sergeant."

I took Corwin's hand and walked out of the hall to a roar of whistling.

The courtyard was cold and silver under the moon.

Halfway across it I stopped.

A man sat on the guardroom steps in a plain grey prisoner's shirt, with his boots gone and his hands hanging between his knees.
