On the Midsummer Eve after my crowning, the Moon Hall smelled of pine boughs and warm bread.
Both courts stood in it, as they had a year before, and this time they stood mixed together.
Grey Highcrest cloaks mingled with Dunmarrow crimson.
The northern packs had brought a barrel of their own black ale and refused to say how strong it was.
The long table in the center of the floor held a single sheet of heavy parchment, with its ink still wet at the top.
I stood at it in a plain grey dress and the narrow gold crown.
Corwin stood at my right in his old brown scribe's coat, because he said it was the only coat that had ever felt like his.
At my left, in a seat of honor she had complained about for an hour, sat the Queen of Highcrest.
"A whole year," she said to the ceiling. "And the girl finally found a clerk who can spell."
"I spelled it," Corwin said.
"You spelled it correctly. It's your first useful contribution to this family."
