Chapter 20: Every Title He Holds
Constance walked to the end of the front row and stopped at the foot of the runway.
She did not use a microphone, and she did not need one.
"Good evening," she said. "I am Constance Palgrave, chair of Palgrave House."
Nobody coughed.
"Two weeks ago my son told two hundred people that a young woman had followed him for years and lost her mind. The recording you have just heard is the truth."
Rhett had gotten to his feet at the end of the runway.
The ring box was still in his hand, open, with the stone throwing a tiny cold spark at the lights.
"Mother," he said. "Please."
"Sit down, Rhett."
"This is a misunderstanding."
"You are standing in the light of your own words," said Constance. "Be quiet and take it."
He shut his mouth.
I had never seen anyone obey her so fast.
She turned to the rows of faces and the lines of cameras.
"I knew about the balcony," she said.
A sound ran through the hall.
"I called what he did charm. I told myself a girl who loved him would make him kinder."
Her hands were folded very tightly at her waist.
"Everything he did to Miss Tannen after that, I allowed." She lifted her chin. "Those were my decisions, and I will answer for them tonight, in front of all of you."
Nobody in the hall moved.
"Starting now."
Behind her, in the third row, the gray-haired man in the bow tie stood up.
He said nothing.
He only buttoned his jacket and stood there.
One by one, six other board members stood beside him.
Constance saw them, and I watched her take a breath.
