Chapter 32: The Skiff
Sawyer came back up the steps and stood next to me and looked where I was looking.
Up at the top floor. At the white dress in the window.
"Oh," he said.
Then he started laughing too, and we stood there on the Ropewalk steps laughing at a hotel.
The skiff had been sitting upside down behind the paint shed since the funeral.
In November I rolled it over.
The transom was punky. The bottom had a soft spot the size of a dinner plate.
Inside the transom, under the seat, in red marine paint gone pink, it still said BOSSMAN.
And under that, NC 4471.
I sat down in the dirt next to it and cried, and then I got my grinder.
I worked on it all winter, nights and Sundays.
Corey did the sanding, because I wasn't allowed near the dust. Sawyer did whatever I told him and did half of it wrong.
Mama brought coffee to the shed and sat on an upturned bucket.
She told me I was too far along to be lying on a creeper.
In February, Bryce's court-martial ended.
The paper ran it on the front page again.
