Chapter 5: The All-Hands
I had a very clear thought, and the thought was, Oh, you absolute idiot.
I did not say it out loud.
I held my coffee at chest height with both hands and kept my face as smooth as a plate.
Beside me, Gwen leaned in and whispered, "He's hot. Why is nobody told the CEO is hot?"
"Gwen."
"I'm only saying."
At the podium, Reed looked out over a hundred and forty faces, found mine in the back, and did not blink.
He had promised me.
He kept the promise.
His eyes moved on to the next row, and the next, and he began to talk.
"I'm not going to read you a speech," he said. "Somebody wrote me one. It's four pages, and the first line is about synergy."
A ripple of laughter went across the floor.
"I flew in Friday night, and I'm told I should have flown in Thursday. I'm sorry for that. I wanted to see this place on a regular morning before anyone cleaned it up."
He glanced at the plant on the front desk.
"It looks very clean."
More laughter.
I felt it too, warm and traitorous, because he was funny, and I knew the sound of his actual laugh.
He did not know how to hide it.
"Here's what I know," he said. "Dunwoody has the best research bench on the Street. We didn't buy a building. We bought what you do."
He spoke for six minutes.
Nobody coughed, nobody checked a phone.
He said the names of clients, and he said them right.
He said he had read three years of the firm's reports on the plane, and that two of them kept him awake.
