Chapter 15: Forgiven Already

Jo's POV

I didn't sleep.

At six I drove to St. Brendan's with the heater on and my hands cold on the wheel.

I was going to find Damian and say it, start to finish, before I lost my nerve.

I had practiced it all night in the kitchen.

The parking garage was nearly empty at that hour.

I pulled onto level three, and his car was already there.

He was sitting on the hood with a paper cup in his hand, still in yesterday's scrubs.

He looked up when I got out.

"I need to tell you something," I said.

"I know."

"No, you don't. Damian, I have to say it before anybody else does."

"I know about March ninth."

The cup went out of my hand and bounced across the concrete.

For a moment I couldn't tell if I'd said anything or if I'd only thought it.

"Perry told you," I said.

"Perry didn't have to."

He got down off the hood and stood in front of me with his hands at his sides.

"I found the invoice on our first anniversary. The body shop, the cash, your handwriting on the receipt."

"That was two years ago."

"Yes."

I heard it, and I didn't understand it, and then I did.
