Chapter 16: The Photo
The photo went up on Brice's feed before breakfast on Sunday.
Roz held her phone out across the counter at the laundromat without a word.
It showed the inside of Clyde's truck, lit white by a flash.
I was in his lap with my hands under his jacket, and his mouth was on my throat.
*Is this the "mother" who wants custody? While her son waited at home, Leona Pennington was in a truck with her own husband's tenant. Unfit. Unstable. Unrepentant. Pray for Milo.*
Under it, four thousand comments had already piled up.
"Her own husband's tenant?" Roz said. "That's the best insult he could find?"
"It means he's making noise," I said.
My hands were cold.
"Some of these are kind," Roz said, scrolling. "Most aren't."
The door opened and Clyde walked in with his jaw set.
He had seen it.
"I'll leave town," he said at once. "If I'm gone, the photo is nothing. It's only a woman and a stranger."
"No."
"Leona. It will cost you the hearing. It will cost you Milo."
"You're not going anywhere. You promised me a back row."
"I promised you a place to stand. That doesn't mean I have to keep standing in your way."
"Is that what you think this is?" I came around the counter. "Brice put a lens in the woods. He did it because he is scared, Clyde. Scared people hit first."
"Then what do we do?"
I looked at Roz, and Roz shrugged.
"We go to Family Night," I said. "Both of us. We do exactly what we planned, and we let him enjoy his photo."
Clyde looked at me for a long moment.
