Chapter 19: Family Night
Leona's POV
The Pennington Auto showroom had been turned into a party.
There were white balloons tied to every bumper, a banner across the ceiling that said FAMILY FIRST, and four hundred people under the lights.
A news crew stood on a riser at the back, and the county prosecutor sat in the front row with a plate of cookies on his knee.
I walked in through the glass doors at ten to seven with the drive in my left boot and Roz's old phone in my coat.
Clyde came in behind me and went straight to the back row, by the side door, with a dark bruise on his cheekbone.
He did not look at me.
That was the plan.
Cassidy found me before I reached the aisle.
She wore a pink dress and the pearl brooch, and she threw both arms around me in front of everyone.
"Leona!" she said. "I'm so glad you came."
I stood stiff in her arms.
She spoke into my hair, very soft, so that only I could hear.
"Brice's lawyer has a statement ready about that tape. It's fake, it's computer trickery, and you're unwell. Sit down and be quiet, and Milo goes to a good school instead of a worse one."
"I'd like to see my son," I said.
"Later."
"Now."
"Smile," Cassidy said, and let go.
She turned to the nearest camera and wiped an invisible tear from her eye.
"Isn't this wonderful?" she told the crowd. "A family, mending."
Two people near me clapped.
I took a seat in the third row, on the aisle, and kept my eyes down until the speeches began.
