Chapter 7: Blackout
The storm hit Asterhaven at nine that night, and at 9:12 every light on Larkin Street went out.
Imogen was in the kitchen with a kettle in one hand when the dark came down.
Her phone buzzed against the counter.
It was Hattie.
*Dylan has the old phone out of the drawer. It's charging at his place. He says he won't hand it to anyone but Percy. He's done being Camille's errand boy.*
Imogen read it by the light of the screen.
Then the screen went dim to save the battery, and she stood in the dark and let herself shake once, all over, and stopped.
Footsteps came down the back stairs.
"Imogen?"
"In here."
"I can't find the candles."
"Second drawer on the left. Don't move. I'll bring one."
She felt along the counter, found the drawer, found the box of matches.
The first match flared and went out.
The second held.
By its small light, she saw Percy standing in the kitchen doorway in a gray sweater, one hand on the frame.
He looked at the candle and not at her.
"I'm not afraid of the dark," he said.
"I didn't say you were."
"You were thinking it."
"I was thinking of the kettle."
She lit two candles from the match and set one on the table.
Wind threw rain against the window so hard that the glass rattled in its frame.
Percy flinched at it, just slightly.
She saw it and said nothing.
The thunder came again, closer, and the windows shook.
"The back door," she said. "It sticks in storms. I'll check the latch."
"I'll do it."
